San Luis Obispo

San Luis Obispo is the location of the Hearst Castle, the extravagant home of newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst. Other kitschy aspects of the town include Bubble Gum Alley, in which people have been sticking their pieces of chewed gum since the 1960's (the gum covers every inch of the entire alley today), and the location of the world's first Jamba Juice. If you decide to visit with your children, check out the Marine Mammal Center which supports sea rescue and other stranded animal operations. For a look back in history, the Carnegie Library, revamped into a historical museum, is a good idea, as well as the Fremont Theater.
