Jekyll Island

Jekyll Island is a barrier island rich in history and wildlife. During the Gilded Age it was a popular resort destination among some of the richest Americans, including Joseph Pulitzer and JP Morgan. Its beautiful beaches are excellent for relaxing, shell collecting or going for a horseback ride. The island is also home to Georgia’s largest public golf facility, offering three 18-hole courses and one 9-hole course. If you bring along your racket, you can enjoy one of the islands 13 clay tennis courts. For those who want to get out on the water, there are dolphin tours, sailing trips and great fishing for sea trout and tarpon, among other species. A wonderful way to explore the island is on a bicycle, which you can rent on the island. Soccer fans will be crazy about the Jekyll Island Soccer Complex, with oceanside fields renowned for their outstanding turf. Various matches and camps take place at the complex throughout the year. Another unique Jekyll Island feature is the Georgia Sea Turtle Center, which protects the endangered loggerhead sea turtles that come to the island to lay their eggs. For a blast from the past you can meander through the Historic District, a national landmark made up of the architectural wonders of the early 20th century. When it’s time to cool off you can head over to Summer Waves, an amazing water park for kids of all ages.
