Visitors to Atlantic Beach are offered a unique mix of beach relaxation and historical sights. Vacationers will find the hub of action on the island to be The Circle, a roundabout surrounded by souvenir shops, a boardwalk, and restaurants. The beach makes for a great place to sunbathe, build sand castles, and play in the waves. Horseback riding along the beach is also a popular Atlantic Beach activity. Competitive fisherman will be interested to know that the town is host to the annual Atlantic Beach King Mackerel Fishing Tournament. September 2006 marked the 28th year for the two day event. Nearby Fort Macon State Park is made up of a 160-acre park, the historic fort, and a civil war artifact museum. The waters of the Atlantic off the Crystal Coast have long been known for the “Ghost Fleetsâ€쳌 of pirate ships that sunk years ago. Scuba divers will love to get a chance to see these underwater treasures up close. Other nearby attractions include the historic cities of New Bern and Beaufort, the second and third oldest cities in North Carolina.
