Dauphin Island

Located three miles south of the Alabama shore, you'll find a perfect beach rental on Dauphin Island, which is just 1.75 miles wide at its widest point. The wider, eastern portion of the island is shaded by thick strands of pine trees and boasts most of the private residences, vacation rentals and attractions. Places to visit include Fort Gaines, the Dauphin Island Sea Lab, Audubon Bird Sanctuary, numerous public golf courses and the Estuarium: a fresh- and saltwater aquarium highlighting species native to Alabama. The fishing pier is a great spot for your family to spend the day and make some memories. It's open 24 hours a day from March - November, and offers more limited hours during the rest of the year. But don't forget your wallet back at the rental, as an admission fee is charged at the pier. If you're in the mood for adventure, charter one of the many deep sea fishing expeditions that leave from Dauphin Island. If you want to get out on the water, but aren't so sure about casting a line into the ocean, you should opt for a Dauphin Island cruise. When staying at your Alabama beach rental on Dauphin Island, here are the top 2 must do activities (besides the beach, of course): 1. The Dauphin Island Sea Lab offers fun learning for all ages. There are a host of exciting activities you'll enjoy, displays, exhibits, classes and programs. Visit the Living Marsh Boardwalk. It takes you through salt water marsh where you;ll se beautiful flora and fauna. Mobile Bay is an example of a drowned river valley, and you can learn all about the dynamic ecosystems and constantly changing shapes of the Barrier Islands. 2. Historic Fort Gaines, named after General Edmund Gaines, was established in 1853, with most construction finished by 1861. The fort is in the middle of what was the Battle of Mobile Bay, one of the Civil War's most important naval battles. The fort was modified in 1898 at the outbreak of the Spanish-American war, but didn't see action. It features an elaborate catch basin and cistern system for storing fresh water, long arched tunnels, and intricate masonry preserved in its original form.
